Transportation Report

Hello everyone. I hope your winter break was great, and that you'll be ready to go this Saturday morning.

Reminder:

Your homework for Saturday is to write the report for question 5 on p. 51 of your books.

Since the topic is public transportation, let's get some discussion going on that topic.

Watch the video below. It's totally subjective and I disagree with it almost completely (starting with the title, which is a disaster), but I'd like to hear your opinions.

Do you agree with this list? Where should Madrid's public transportation in general, and its metro specifically, rank on a global list? What do you like about it? What do you dislike? Why?

These are the things you should include in your report for Saturday, so use your classmates as critics for your ideas, and for your vocabulary. Don't be afraid to make mistakes! A few comments on the blogs will make a big impression on me.

  1. Hello everyone!

I've never been in most of cities that appear in this video (Seoul, Moscow, Tokyo...) so I can say anything about their Metro system.

However, I think Madrid's Metro should be in a better place because it's more clean than the others which appear on the video and its structure of stations is very clear. When I was in Paris I thought I wouldn't go out in at lest one day because the map was a labyrinth.

I'm agree about Tokyo's Metro mark. Although I've never been there, Tokyo is the most modern city in the world so I suppose its Metro has very good conditions.

  2. I agree with you Sara, Madrid's metro system is well-organized, well-maintained, and easy to navigate. It used to be an almost entirely pleasant experience, but the recent cuts and frequent strikes have made it less so. Sometimes it's so crowded I fell like I'm in Tokyo. In spite of this, it should be ranked higher, certainly above New York. The subway there is very confusing, and much dirtier than Madrid's. I still haven't seen any rats in the metro here, whereas I certainly can't say the same about the subway in New York! Thanks for your comments!

  3. Also Madrid's metro is the sixth largest metro system in the world, and that's a reason because I think that it should be ranked higher, I've been to some of the metro systems that appear on the video, and I think that it should be definitely ranked higher than Barcelona and Paris metro systems, because of the way the lines are connected which is more efficient and you don't need to make useless line changes.
I totally agree with choosing London's subway as the best subway in the world. It's really fast, if you want to change the line you don't have to walk during 10 minutes to get to the other railway (this is some of the things that I don't like of Madrid's metro) and each station is different, so you don't get bored while being in there, and of course I love the "mind the gap" message every time the train stops.

    2. I totally agree with you about Paris' metro system, Guillermo. I'm afraid I haven't been at most of the places that appear at the video, but I really think Madrid's metro should be in a higher position.
Also the point mentioned by Andrew, about the recent cuts and frequent strikes, seems pretty important...at least in my opinion. So many Metro entrances are now close...not to mention the reduction in services and oppening hours (it used to close at 1.30, now most of the stations close at 12.30); I think these are important reasons to keep in mind, aren't they?

See you guys! Enjoy the rest of the week and good luck with your exams!
